Women of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America

PURPOSE STATEMENT

As a community of women

created on the image of God,

Called to discipleship in Jesus Christ,

And empowered by the Holly Spirit,

We commit ourselves to grow in faith,

Affirm our gifts,

Support one another in our callings,

engage in ministry and action,

And promote healing and wholeness

in the church, the society, and the world.

WELCOME

“Lutheran Woman Today” (LWT), the official magazine of Women of
the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, offers an exciting mix of
faith-in-life articles, theological reflections, devotions, and stories of
comfort and challenge that lift up the mission of Women of the ELCA:

To mobilize women to act boldly on their faith in Jesus Christ. Each
issue will illuminate the path you travel as a person of faith and connect
you to women both far and near who share a commitment to making
God known. It contains interesting and inspirational stories and articles
besides news and project information submitted by women of congregations
throughout the ELCA. This little handbook gives you an overview of
what will be highlighted in the coming months of LWT.

St. Matthews’, like many other ELCA women’s groups, chooses to use
the LWT material for its monthly Bible Studies. The LWT magazine includes
Bible Study material on the same schedule as the average 9-month public
school system, September - May. The summer issues contain a separate
3-month Bible Study. Therefore, this new year for St. Matthew’s Women
of the ELCA, and this handbook, begins with September 2005 and ends with
August 2006.

Welcome to each monthly meeting of St. Matthew’s Women of the ELCA
(often called WELCA) which begins each month with the Bible Study.
The monthly WELCA meetings are held at the church on the third Tuesday
of each month, beginning at 7:00 p.m.

LWT Monthly Themes

These Themes and the Bible Studies are found in the “Lutheran
Woman Today” (LWT). Group subscriptions are no longer submitted
by local Women of the ELCA, but are processed individually from the
magazine headquarters itself, similar to subscribing methods used by
other magazines.

Our church will be provided one copy of LWT each month as a free
information copy in the church office for those wishing to learn more
about the magazine. If you wish to order a subscription for yourself,
please obtain an order form from the Kiosk, or see any WELCA member.
Please be aware that because you’re a member of St. Matthew’s, you’re
eligible to receive the group subscription rate. Just be sure to indicate on
your subscription form that St. Matthew’s Lutheran as your congregation.

WELCA SPRING LUNCHEON
WELCA has chosen Saturday, May 3rd for the Spring Salad Luncheon. This annual event will be held in Fellowship Hall, and all women are invited to attend. WELCA is in need of 2 or more St. Matthews women to volunteer to chair this really fun event. If you are interested, please contact Robin Elwart, Connie Anderson or Margaret Galgerud for more information.

WELCA SPRING YARD SALE
WELCA is once again planning a spring yard sale for Saturday, May 17th. Any saleable merchandise can be dropped off at the church — please leave items in the Library or in the basement, clearly marked “WELCA YARD SALE.” We will be asking for a lot of help from the congregation, as this is our big fundraiser and involves a lot of physical labor. We’ll be looking for help to move items, as well as setting up and tearing down the sale. If you would like to help, or need help transporting large items, please contact Robin Elwart or Connie Anderson to make arrangements.
