St. Matthew's Lutheran Church - Winter

St Matthew’s Prayer Shawl Group

When - Meets the first Monday of each month

Where – St Matthew's Lutheran Church

What Time – 6:30PM to 8:00PM, but if you can only stay for a few minutes, that’s okay.  Any time you can spend is wonderful.

What is it?  - We make shawls for anyone  (men, women, children, sick, troubled, weary) who is having a difficult time in their life and might be comforted by being wrapped in prayer. They are shawls to wrap in, lap robes for the bedridden or wheel chair bound, smaller versions for children, and it just seems that people understand it's a gift with no strings attached. (no pun intended).  The whole idea is that you pray while you knit for whomever will receive the wrap, that they be comforted, and warmed, find peace or healing, and feel the love of God.  Somehow it seems to mean more to the recipients than we ever thought it would for people to receive a "prayer hug" from someone they don't even know.  Each one is packed with a card explaining the basic intent of the program.

Do I need to know how to knit or crochet? No - We have members who are very accomplished and are able to teach beginners, and it isn't how well you knit or crochet that counts, but a willingness to pray a little.

How do I get involved?  All are welcome. Church affiliation or denomination is never a question, and the recipient doesn't need to be a member, a Christian, or a relative of anybody.... We visit, relax, pray a little and knit a lot.  Anybody of any age (men or women) is welcome.  We have all ages attending, from teens to retirees.  Just show up or if you need a contact person call or email St Matthews at:  801.965.8484 stoffice@stmatthewut.org

If I can’t join – How else can I help?  Donations of yarn, or money to buy yarn is accepted, and when we buy a new batch of yarn, we ask pastor to pray with us and bless the yarn and our efforts to create warmth and hope for those who need it most.

How do I request a shawl? Contact St Matthew’s at 801.965.8484 stoffice@stmatthewut.org - Anyone can request a shawl, we just like to keep track of how many are made and who they go to so we can continue to keep people in our prayers, and keep up with the level of need.

Special comments from a group member – “I have been both a knitter and a recipient,, and I just can't find the words to describe how good both ends of this chain feel.  To wrap up at a chemo session and think that someone spent hours and hours praying for YOU is a very comforting feeling.  I don't know which warms you more, the shawl or the thought of all those prayers.  The same goes for finishing one and knowing that your prayers may have already started to help whomever receives your gift.”
